Frugal Food Saving
Plan Your Lunches - Daily
By packing your lunches every day, a family of three can save about forty-five dollars a week or around $2,340 a year. This is based on a nutritious lunch that includes sandwich, water, fruit, carrot or celery sticks and yogurt. You will not only find yourself saving money, but feeling healthier and fuller.
Plan Your Home Cooked Meals - Weekly
Home cooked meals are great, and cooking them does not have to be an unpleasant task. One method is taking two hours on a Saturday or Sunday, cooking three main dishes and three vegetables. Then section the food into different microwavable containers to make separate meals. It’s usually enough to last three days. In the evenings instead of cooking or eating out, put a container in the microwave and within seconds you have a home cooked meal. You end up cooking about two or three time per week. You save time, money, and get variety.
Plan Your Road Trip Snacks
When you go to the park, visit friends, the movies or just away from home -bring our own snacks. It saves an average of twenty to thirty dollars a week or $1,300 a year. Also, when visiting family and friends you don’t inconvenience them by having them feel like they need to feed you, and you know your food was prepared with clean hands in a clean place.
Plan Your Dining Out
When you do eat out, plan and budget for those occasions. By planning ahead and allowing for the cost of the meal, you find yourself able to enjoy it more and not worry. Do try to limit these outings to once a month as they can add up quickly. One dinner for four could easily cover a week’s food budget for the same family.

Planning your meals for a week+ at a time is great advice. When I do that, and post the “upcoming menu” on the fridge, it really helps keep things on track.

Great blog, subscribed to your rss feed. Thanks.

If only I could make our meals ahead of time. Sadly, my fiance refused (REFUSES) to eat leftovers of any kind–even ones that haven’t actually had a first go-round the table!

Planning out your meals a week in advance is an excellent idea! I would make a big pot of food (chilli, spaghetti sauce, etc) and section it off into separate containers. Because I know exactly how much of each ingredient I put into the pot, I knew the calorie + fat content so I could make each meal just the right size. It’s a good way to not accidentally eat too much!

I got a little busy this days but I always make sure that I plan my meals weekly. I also, recycle my left over to avoid wasting food and money. You just need to be a little bit creative for the recipe. Nice article, it helps us a lot, keep posting.

Hey I’m cutting back on food costs as much as I can, I’ve saved $50 a month by not buying famous brands but generic ones. I’d recommend you try it.

Good ideas. Another thing I try to do when taking any kind of a trip–take drinks and snacks with you. A case of water costs $4. At a convenience store, or highway stop, 1 bottle will cost $1-2. It doesn’t take long to come out ahead.

October 21st, 2008 12:15 pm
I think planning your meals daily and preparing them on weekly basis is very effective. You can do the cooking during Saturdays or Sundays and pack them carefully on containers or plastics and just put them on the fridge and reheat them later on. By doing this you were able to save money and time plus it gives you assurance that the food you are eating is healthy.
October 22nd, 2008 8:40 am
It’s crazy how much extra food can cost if you don’t plan. I save about $50 dollars a week bringing my sandwich to work. Good tips though.

This is absolutely true! Start yourself a garden - even a simple backyard one (or pots on the porch!), and you’ll save even more (during summer, anyway). Then you can store and can your veggies for winter!
October 29th, 2008 3:16 pm
It’s really amazing how much you can save by looking at the little expenses. Detailed information and great idea, Thanks !
October 29th, 2008 4:30 pm
You really can save a lot by bringing food to work and not eating out. Not only that, it’s a lot better for you typically because fast-food is such junk. I started eating at home with organic foods (as much as possible) about a year ago and I feel like a completely different person. I have a lot more energy and I’ve developed an immune system that could take on AIDS if need be. (joke). It’s win-win!

November 14th, 2008 11:51 pm
I like to buy in bulk and use a Foodsaver to preserve food for a long time. It helps stretch a dollar a little bit more.
November 17th, 2008 11:43 am
These are tough times, and any good and acceptable way of savings is welcome. Your article on savings through planning your lunches and weekly food are indeed very practical and worth adopting.
Add to this, the reduction that is possible by using more of public transport system whenever possible without losing your time and dignity.

Smart tips. It’s absolutely amazing how much money you can save by simply cutting restaurants out of the budget. We now go just once a week, as a weekend special meal, and cook the rest of the nights. It’s been a great money saver.
December 2nd, 2008 2:02 am
now that’s some good stuff you wrote Brigid. it gives the cash disposal for other things to reinvest.
December 2nd, 2008 12:32 pm
Also keep on eye on what kind and how many meat you put in a dinner. Chicken and vegetables are much cheaper and taste great.
December 7th, 2008 12:03 pm
I personally can’t imagine planning my diet. I go to the office and see what the cafeteria offers today. When I go home I just stop somewhere and eat something. I know I’m not saving any money with such practice, but I’m saving time. Time = money, right?
December 8th, 2008 11:25 am
Still people don’t know how can save money,by preparing their food. One of the method you mentioned above is nice.Packing lunch thereby we can save money. And also we can have nutritious food.Home cooked foods are always good for health.

Great write up! Especially in today’s day and age where every nickle counts. I’ve started doing this plan for this week to see how it goes. I made pre-made portions of lunches for today-wednesday and hope that it will work out well.

Not only pack lunches, but buy ingredients that are generic like Mayo and Mustard. That will save you quite a bit too!
December 18th, 2008 12:54 am
I worked out how much I spend on lunches during a working week and it nearly made me cry. There’s a lot to be said for leftovers and crisp sandwiches.

Thanks very much
December 21st, 2008 1:50 am
I find too, that by taking my own lunch to work, rather than buying fast food, I feel better in the afternoon. Not so apt to fall asleep at my computer. =)
December 21st, 2008 4:38 am
Saves time. money and health. But sometimes I overeat self/home cooked food because they are so tasty.
December 21st, 2008 8:04 am
It’s sad that it’s usually cheaper to eat quick and unhealthy.
We need healthy fast food restaurants.
December 22nd, 2008 10:57 pm
Are you kidding me! This is a great list. I am trying to get my budget cut and live frugally. This is a great guide to helping me during this transition.
January 3rd, 2009 2:42 am
Great post - I’ve done some of these things for years and I always have more extra cash than my friends…
January 4th, 2009 1:07 am
I also love to plan to take my coffee with me to work. Buying coffee out can get super expensive and really add up over the course of a year.
January 7th, 2009 7:40 am
I am really saving up this year since we are planning to buy our house and lot. This tips are really handy especially the coffee thing since I am an espresso addict, I might as well bring some in my workplace.
January 9th, 2009 6:50 am
Those are some great tips, except I would personally stay away from microwaves.
January 10th, 2009 3:14 pm

Wow, this is a really nice blog! Thanks for the food frugality tips!
January 12th, 2009 3:20 am
That’s true. My basic principal in food saving is to think “Do we need this? or simply want it?”. When on trip, especially easy to be tempting by juicy-delicious snack all around. So to lower, the temptation, it’s simple to me; just make my own snack. Thousand of snack recipe, its just a click away.
January 12th, 2009 11:50 pm
I think planning your lunches is an easy thing to do and saves a significant amount of money in the long run. I have been doing it for quite some time now and have noticed significant savings.
January 14th, 2009 12:32 am
I’m an absolute food nut and even though I totally understand the economics and convenience of cooking 3 days at a time, I can’t imagine sacrificing the flavor and quality of meals that way.
Reheating in the microwave isn’t always horrible, but nothing can compare to food that’s properly prepared and brought directly from kitchen to plate.
January 16th, 2009 7:18 am
I tell people that saving a single dollar a day can be worth so much over the long run. It’s so difficult to grasp this idea, but realize that a dollar a day amounts to $10,000 over the time of a typical home mortgage, or $25,000 over a lifetime.
Now imagine something like taking lunch to work. That can save you $100,000 to $200,000 over a lifetime. Enough to buy a small house.
Wow!
January 16th, 2009 10:22 pm
Hi,
I completely agree with your post. i also make a packed lunch for my daughter so that is have some comtrol over what she eats such as the healthy stuff. A little treat every now and then but I know when. Very interesting blog!
January 17th, 2009 9:20 pm
I am trying my best to resist people asking me out to go eat lunch with them. It’s not easy, but it’s saving me money.

It’s interesting that the food decisions that are good for the pocket are also great for weight loss and having a healthy diet
January 20th, 2009 6:08 pm
Hey, if you can follow these tips, you are surely going to save some money
January 23rd, 2009 7:15 pm
I’ve been packing a lunch for years. The difference between what you explained and what I do is I actually pack a meal similar to dinner for lunch. Instead of spending $10 on a steak lunch, I bring my own steak lunch and it cost me less than $2.
January 31st, 2009 10:05 am
You know, I want to write something like this. This is awesome. Would you like to give review about my site? Well, I need some opinion from blogger like you.
February 4th, 2009 9:05 pm
Once I started mapping what I was going to eat about a week advance, it was much, much easier for me to stay within the parameters of my diet. And times when I was really craving a certain something, looking forward in the week to see I was allowed it the next day help to subside that urgent, immediate need that we all know too well. Not to mention, it saved me money as well. Thank.
February 6th, 2009 11:46 am
Hey thanks for this. I really need to keep track on that I almost spent $15-$20 a day which is very high. And I need to reduce my weight also. So I would highly appreciate if you can give some tips on that. And eating out is also not too advisable.
February 11th, 2009 11:51 am
LMAO! People are crazy when it comes to achieving backlinks! This post is months old and still people are commenting on it.
February 12th, 2009 3:11 am
This is GREAT advice. Sometimes the little things go a LONG way- we never realize that until we hit tough times!
P.S. Another good tip is to downgrade to the ‘no frills’ brands if you can. Most grocery stores have their own labels, and they are often a lot cheaper than branded labels, especially for food staples. You can save lots of money buying store brands and the product is usually just as good!
February 12th, 2009 12:20 pm
My problem is more complicated. I need to save and I need to gain weight at the same time. Neat tips you have there though.
February 17th, 2009 1:14 pm
Very useful tips indeed. I think we can plan more than meals though.
February 25th, 2009 12:49 pm
These are great tips on frugal living. However, it really takes a lot of work to save money. Thanks for the tips! I will try my best to follow them especially limiting our dinners outside the home. Food is our only vice and this will really take a toll on us.
February 27th, 2009 8:11 pm
I don’t know if I agree with everything in your post, but you have definitely given me something to think about.
March 4th, 2009 8:45 pm

March 8th, 2009 1:27 pm
I don’t mention it before. It’s really helpful to save our money in today economic recession. Thanks.
March 8th, 2009 9:31 pm
Eating pre-cooked foods for several days might be a good idea to save time but not when it comes to providing actual nutrition. Raw foods such as vegetables and fruits lose over half of their vitamin and enzymatic content during the course of two days. It is worse with cooked food as it has less nutritional value to begin with.
March 9th, 2009 1:03 am
We plan our meals a week ahead, and have it down to a fine art…
We know what needs to be got out of the freezer, when it needs to be got out, and we know that we have all the ingredients we need for the meals we’re going to cook.
March 11th, 2009 9:04 pm
This is a good idea! I will try it. Thanks.

I have to say that those homemade lunches go a long way. I never calculated the annual total because of course it depends on what the alternative options cost. But I do know that homemade lunches are also faster to eat (no to/fro to restaurant/cafe) so that it allows my hubby to go for a walk after lunch… The bit of fresh air is a welcome bonus…
April 9th, 2009 12:06 pm
A very good piece of advice, as these expenses can add up, as you already calculated.
