Willpower in Self Reliance and Constructive Change
Sit down and think about where you can find your willpower to make constructive changes. You are the only one who can change your own behavior. Changing any type of habitual, negative behavior requires willpower. When you want to change your behavior, the first thing that you have to do is make a conscious decision to change. Once you make a decision to change, you have then stuck to that decision. The ability to follow through with a change you have decided to make is what willpower is all about.Â
Willpower requires a conscious effort to put mind over matter. When you want or crave something that you know is bad for you, it takes will power to avoid giving in to temptation. Willpower is an important component of self-reliance. You have consciously to stay away from negative or harmful activities through an act of will in order to change your behavior long term.Â
You are the only person who can change your own behavior. Once you make a decision to change, you will have an easier time sticking to your decision if you come up with a set of strategies designed to keep you from losing your willpower.Â
Many times, the secrets to changing your behavior lie in your subconscious mind. By reflecting internally, you may be able to discover solutions to behavior change that are buried within your subconscious. You may also want to do some external research of willpower and behavior change. There are many books and Internet resources that provide this type of information. However, simply becoming aware of barriers to change or the secrets of how to change isn’t enough to bring about change. You have to make a decision and take action to bring about change on your won.Â
Many people want to give up smoking. Quitting smoking is a very difficult thing to do. However, there are many reasons to give up smoking. Smoking is an expensive, unhealthy, and unattractive habit. Very few people who smoke want to keep smoking, but they are not successful when they attempt to give up the habit.Â
Those who are not successful at their attempts to quit smoking frequently say that they didn’t have the willpower to break the addiction to nicotine. Instead of being self-reliant enough to have the willpower to accomplish their goals, they give in to cravings. Other people are successful at giving up smoking. Many of those who are successful use strategies that can help them improve their will power. For example, some people engage in activities designed to keep their mouths busy when trying to quit smoking. For example, smokers who want to quit often try things like sucking on hard candy or chewing on a straw.
Â
If you want to eliminate the bad habit of smoking, you have to make up your mind to quit and act on your decision. You have to be self-reliant, and believe in your ability to quit. You have to know that quitting is going to be hard, but worthwhile. By focusing on the reasons why quitting smoking can be beneficial to you, you may be able to find the willpower to beat the habit. You have to respect yourself enough to bring about positive changes in your life. No matter how difficult it may be to ignore your nicotine cravings, if you are self-reliant, you can beat them. Willpower is the key to quitting smoking, but to have willpower, you must first know and like yourself for who you are and be self-reliant enough to stick to behavior patterns that will let you make the positive changes that will lead to your ultimate happiness.
